PROVIDENCE, RI — Tensions and fears are running high across the country, with concerns about repeat attacks like that on the U.S. Capitol last week in the coming days. Here in Rhode Island, state officials assured the public that no credible threats have been made at this time. "Recent events, including last week's attack on the U.S. Capitol, have raised concerns about security across our country," State Police Col. James Manni said in a statement. "I want to reassure Rhode Islanders that there are no credible threats to our state at this time." Manni said that the state police and other law enforcement agencies are remaining extra vigilant. "As always, we are in close communication with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and are monitoring other sources of intelligence through our Fusion Center," he continued. "The Rhode Island State Police is prepared to address any risks to public safety and meet any security challenges that could develop." Members of the Rhode Island National Guard will be heading to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration, but that isn't because of security concerns. Captain Mark Incz, a public affairs officer with the Rhode Island National Guard, said that the National Guard has been a part of every inauguration since 1789. "Certainly recent events are a cause for concern," Incz said. "I don't think there's anything unusual or untoward about our participation." It hasn't yet been determined how many members will be sent to the nation's capital from Rhode Island. Their main duties are expected to be traffic control and logistical support. In total, about 15,000 National Guardsmen will be in attendance from across the country.
