NEWTOWN, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department is investigating several reports of people who dropped off mailed checks at the mail collection box at the Newtown Post Office only to have them turn up stolen and forged. On Nov. 21, police investigated a report of U.S. mail found open, torn and discarded near the post office at 20 Terry Drive. Since then, police have received several reports of victims whose stolen and forged checks that were initially dropped at the mail collection box were later found to have been altered and deposited into various bank accounts in Philadelphia, the Paterson, New Jersey area and the Bronx, police said. Each of the stolen checks was written and mailed by the victims on Nov. 19. An unidentified man was captured on various surveillance cameras in New York and Pennsylvania depositing the forged checks and withdrawing funds from those checks. He was seen wearing the same Nike clothing on various dates and drives a white-colored sedan with tinted windows with distinct damage to its left front bumper and a front license plate. Anyone with information or believes they may be a victim can contact Detective Corporal Daniel Bartle at 215-579-1000 ext. 288.
