BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge police handled a number of cases in early January, including those involving check fraud, a mystery goo, suspicious recreation, a test-driving speeder, a dog at large and a customer dispute. Here is information from the police reports: Check fraud Tria Architecture, 901 McClintock Drive, told police Jan. 8 that someone altered 17 checks from the business between Dec. 8 and Dec. 11, totaling $28,000. The bank is refunding the money as long as a police report is filed. An officer referred the business to a postal inspector. This has been a problem for Burr Ridge businesses in recent months. An employee at a business in the 7400 block of Wolf Road told police Jan. 6 that a $795 check to Sonitrol Chicago West never reached its destination and was fraudulently cashed. The officer referred the employee to a postal inspector. Mystery goo A guest at Marriott, 1200 Burr Ridge Parkway, called police about 4 a.m. to say he was concerned about a cup with red goo in it. Officers learned the red goo was sweet and sour sauce from the Chinese food he had ordered earlier. The man seemed bothered about being implicated in something his brother was doing. He would not say what his brother was doing. The man said he was fine. Suspicious recreation An employee of a business in the 700 block of McClintock Drive told police Jan. 5 that someone drove up to the light post outside his office in a 2013 Lexus and was fiddling with the post. An officer found a small film container containing waterlogged paper. The employee provided the officer with the license plate number, and the officer contacted the owner, who said his brother was "geocaching," which is defined as a recreational activity of finding hidden objects through GPS coordinates on a website. Girls on ice? Police received a report that two 12-year-old girls were playing on the ice about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 6 in the 7400 block of Arbor Avenue. An officer did not see anyone on the ice or any 12-year-old girls. Test-driving speeder Police received a call that the driver of a white Infiniti was speeding in the area of Post Road about 3 p.m. Jan. 7. An officer found the car without license plates parked in a driveway on Carriage Way. The driver said he was test-driving a car. He said he sells cars and had not received his license plates yet. The officer told the driver to slow down driving in the neighborhood. Shelby returned A person saw a black and white medium-sized mix breed dog running in the 7700 block of Drew Avenue. An officer caught the dog and found the owner in the 7800 block of Drew. She was looking for the dog, named Shelby. The officer returned Shelby to the woman and warned her for having a dog at large. Customer dispute A customer dispute took place about 9:30 a.m. Jan. 8 at Hanger Clinic: Prosthetics & Orthotics, 100 Tower Drive. A customer and her husband were upset that employees repaired an old brace and put it back on her old shoe in addition to putting a new brace on her new shoe. She and her husband eventually left with the old repaired brace and old shoe.
