SAN DIEGO, CA — An armed robbery suspect believed to be armed with a knife holed up in a Midway-area Subway sandwich shop following a botched holdup attempt Thursday, leading to a standoff with SWAT officers. The failed robbery at a strip mall in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard was reported shortly before 3 p.m., according to San Diego police. When officers arrived, the unidentified perpetrator refused to exit Subway, which also remained occupied by several employees apparently being held inside against their will. About 3:30 p.m., the hostages exited the business unharmed. As the stalemate unfolded, a special weapons and tactics team was called in along with crisis negotiators, SDPD public-affairs Officer Scott Lockwood said. The standoff was ongoing as of 3:45 p.m., according to police. — City News Service
