ELMHURST, IL — The increase in the number of teachers in Elmhurst School District 205 has exceeded enrollment growth over the last decade. Released online last week, the district's annual audit report showed the yearly numbers for employees and students from the 2010-2011 to 2019-2020 school years. In 2011, the district employed 624 teachers, a number that increased to 721 in 2020, a 16 percent jump. Over the last decade, the number of administrators increased by two, totaling 24. Meanwhile, the number of assistant superintendents was eight in 2020, an increase of three. Those increases didn't reflect other classes of employees. The number of custodians remained at 84 through the decade. And food service employees dropped to 62, from 76, many of whom have been laid off during the pandemic. Overall, the number of employees increased to 1,206, up from 1,138 a decade earlier, or a 6 percent increase. During the 10 years, student enrollment increased 4.5 percent. It was 8,563 at the end of last school year, up from 8,189 in 2011. By another measure, the district employed one teacher for every 13 students in 2011. A decade later, it was one teacher for a dozen students. The percentage of "limited English proficient students" stood at 9.9 percent last year, up from 5.8 percent a decade before. Students with disabilities made up 17.3 percent of enrollment in 2020, up from 14 percent in 2011. That number went up and down over the years, showing no clear trend.
