On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Cobb County Board of Commissioner approved (by 4-1 vote) to reallocate $3.5 million unused funds from the Homesavers Mortgage and Homesavers Rental Assistance Programs to other rental assistance programs. Star-C will administer $1.5 million through their program while the the remaining $2 million to be disbursed by the Sweetwater Mission, the Center for Family Resources and MUST Ministries.
Residents in need could qualify for up to $4,800 in rental assistance. Any other unexpended CARES funds will be used to reimburse Cobb public safety personnel for costs related to the pandemic.
Earlier this year, the federal government provided Cobb County with a $132 million via CARES Act to help mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for county residents and businesses. Almost $50 million was used to assist small businesses and $14.3 to various groups in mortgage and rental assistance programs. An additional $1.7 million was used to fund food assistance programs. The county has until March 31, 2021 to account for these funds.
The County Commission also approved the motion to apply for the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021.
