NEW YORK CITY — Becoming the first president to be impeached twice is a fitting dishonor for Donald Trump, New York City's leaders overwhelmingly said. All but one of New York City's congressional representatives voted Wednesday to charge Trump with "incitement of insurrection" for his role in spurring an attack on the U.S. Capitol. Their votes further delineated a clean break between Trump and his hometown. The president now resides in Florida and he's persona non grata across wide swaths of the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio, who moved to terminate the Trump Organization's contracts in the city, welcomed the impeachment. "Seven days ago, Donald Trump incited a deadly riot to overturn the will of the people," he tweeted Wednesday. "Today, he found out what happens when you try to mess with the people. "It's time for the Senate to finish the job." Newly-elected Rep. Ritchie Torres, who hails from the Bronx, made his first speech on the House floor in support of Trump's impeachment. "The impeachment of Donald Trump is not politics but law; not passion but reason; not vengeance but justice," he said. Rep. Jerry Nadler, who helped lead the first impeachment effort against Trump, took the House floor to state that racism played a direct role in the riots. He later highlighted this charge in a tweet. "The President's violent rhetoric is always at its most fevered pitch when he is talking about the civil rights and civic aspirations of Black Americans and other minority communities," Nadler said. As the House voted to impeach Trump, New York City's leaders issued statements of support. "There has never been a President more deserving of the distinction of having been impeached twice, or less deserving of the office he still occupies until either the Senate acts courageously to convict him or his term expires, than Donald Trump," Jumaane Williams, the city's public advocate, said in a statement. Chuck Schumer, the Senate's incoming majority leader, said a trial will move forward — a fulfillment of a demand protesters recently made outside his Prospect Park West home. "Donald Trump has deservedly become the first president in American history to bear the stain of impeachment twice over," he tweeted.
