HIGHLAND PARK, NJ — A small child was attacked by a raccoon in Highland Park, police there announced on Facebook Tuesday night.
The attack occurred at around 4 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Harrison Avenue, said Highland Park Police Capt. Jose Curbelo.
The child, 6, had been playing in the backyard of their home and was attacked by the raccoon without provocation or warning, said police. The child was treated by a doctor, is home now and is expected to make a full recovery.
"We are asking our community to call the Police Department if they see any raccoon acting strangely or approaching people or pets," said Curbelo. "Currently the raccoon has not been caught and as of today (Wednesday), there have been no sightings."
It is currently unknown if the raccoon had rabies, as it was not caught.
If you see a raccoon, please do not approach it and call Highland Park Police immediately at (732) 572-3800, said police.
"Please monitor your children and pets when outdoors and immediately report any wild animals who exhibit aggressive or unusual activity," said Highland Park Police on Facebook.
