LAKEWOOD, NJ — The Lakewood community on Wednesday was mourning the death of John Franklin, a longtime civil servant who also served as the township's mayor. Franklin's first step into local government happened in 1964 when he joined the Lakewood School Board, The Lakewood Scoop reports. He then went on to serve on the township committee for 25 years, including 5 spent as mayor. During his time in Lakewood, Franklin also served on the planning board, as police commissioner and as director of public works, the Lakewood Scoop reports. The Lakewood Police Department on Wednesday shared a post recognizing Franklin's contributions to the township. "Sadly, John Franklin passed away at 91," the department wrote on Twitter. "He inspired & impacted so many lives by his devotion and loyalty to the citizens of the Lakewood Township. He will surely be missed by all." Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch, a volunteer community safety organization, also addressed the loss. "John dedicated his life for the growth of Lakewood, always serving with dignity and honor," the safety watch's post reads. "His legacy will remain for years to come." Funeral details were not immediately available.
