Woman Struck Pedestrian With Car, Drove Away: Darien Police

DARIEN, CT — A 75-year-old Stamford woman was issued misdemeanor summonses on charges of evading responsibility and related violations Saturday after she struck a pedestrian with her car on the Post Road and drove away, according to Darien police. The pedestrian, who was walking a bicycle across the street near Sedgwick Avenue when struck, was taken to a nearby hospital by POST 53 for evaluation following the 3 p.m. incident. The extent of any injuries was not disclosed. "The victim had been walking their bike across the Post Road when a westbound vehicle stopped and waved them across," Darien police said. "As the victim began to cross in front of the stopped vehicle, the suspect vehicle passed the stopped vehicle on the right side and struck the bicycle knocking both it and the victim to the ground." The offending vehicle, driven by Mei Ling Bigley, of Strawberry Hill Avenue, then drove off, but witnesses gave police a description of the vehicle and the license plate number. Bigley was pulled over by an officer as she was entering I-95 at exit 11. Police said she "admitted to striking the victim," but she thought it was "permissable for her to leave the scene" because she thought "the victim seemed to be okay." Officers saw a "black streak of what appeared to be rubber down the driver's side door" of Bigley's car, which they said was consistent with a bicycle tire. Bigley also was issued misdemeanor summonses on charges of an illegal pass on the right, and failure to insure a motor vehicle. She was released on a promise to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Jan. 19.
