RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Officials are gearing up for a "massive vaccination program for more than two million county residents," according to a statement released Wednesday in Riverside County. The county has deployed a team that is setting up several sites capable of vaccinating thousands of residents each day. The first of those sites — for certain frontline workers and those 65 and older — were announced Wednesday. (Click here to see which frontline workers are eligible.) "The county team is moving quickly to open more sites that will vaccinate even more of our residents," said Board Chair Karen Spiegel, Second District Supervisor. "We know so many of our residents want the vaccine and we're working diligently to make that happen." The clinics will provide vaccines free of charge, however, those who show up will be required to register prior to arrival and show proof of eligibility (badge, business identification, letter of proof from employer). Medical insurance information will be requested. Those 65 and older who need assistance making an appointment can call the Riverside County Office of Aging at 800-510-2020 or 2-1-1. Coronavirus Update For Riverside County COVID-19 hospitalizations dipped slightly Wednesday in Riverside County as officials reported 2,773 newly confirmed cases and 13 additional coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of COVID-19 cases recorded countywide since the public health documentation period began in early March is 230,600, compared to 227,827 on Tuesday, according to the Riverside University Health System. The county's coronavirus death toll rose to 2,307. The RUHS reported 1,660 coronavirus hospitalizations countywide, down 24 from Tuesday, but the number of intensive care unit patients edged up by nine from a day earlier. Emergency Management Director Bruce Barton told the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that about half of patients in hospitals countywide have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Barton said six facilities are at 100 percent of licensed bed capacity. However, all hospitals are resorting to surge plans to expand critical care space wherever possible. No patients are being transferred to facilities outside the county because of space limitations. The 11-county Southern California region's ICU availability officially remains at 0 percent.
