JOLIET, IL — A 19-year-old Joliet man faces felony gun charges after Joliet police say he lost control of his car Tuesday night and crashed into the front lawn of someone's house on Rowell Avenue. Javon Cooley was not injured, but Joliet police booked him into the Will County Jail. He's been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition and not having a FOID to possess his gun, according to Joliet police.
Around 9:10 p.m., Joliet squad cars rolled up to the east-side house in the 1200 block of Rowell Avenue after learning someone crashed into the front yard.
According to police, Cooley was driving his car southbound along Rowell Avenue toward Mills Road and that's when he lost control and ended up in someone's front yard.
"While officers were investigating the crash, they located an empty handgun ammunition magazine in Cooley's vehicle," Joliet police announced. "Officers located a handgun in another vehicle that was on scene to assist Cooley. It was determined that Cooley was the owner of the handgun and magazine and he was placed into custody without incident."
Cooley was booked into the Will County Jail around 1 a.m. Wednesday. The jail lists his address as the 100 block of South Hammes Avenue on the city's west side.
Joliet resident Bob Hernandez learned about the crash so he went to the scene to produce one of his popular Facebook Live videos that aims to highlight the work of Joliet police and Joliet firefighter/paramedics.
