UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — With Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Tuesday announcement that more groups of New Yorkers are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, Upper West Siders are signing themselves and family members up for the shot. For Upper West Side residents looking to stay in the neighborhood, there are currently two city-sponsored vaccine sites on the UWS. As of Wednesday afternoon, there are 24 vaccine sites in Manhattan, but more are expected to open in the coming days and weeks. Cuomo announced on Tuesday that New Yorkers over the age of 65 will now be eligible to get the coronavirus vaccine after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention altered its guidance on vaccine prioritization to recommend inoculating that group. The expanded criteria will open up vaccinations to at least 1.8 million more New York State residents, Cuomo said. Immunocompromised individuals are also slated to become eligible to get vaccinated under the new federal guidelines, but state officials are still working with the CDC to determine who qualifies as part of that group, according to Melissa DeRosa, a top aide to the governor.
