ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta Drum Academy, a nonprofit organization with a mission to be a safe space and inspire and educate children through drumming, will bring their talented team of youth drummers to The Interlock in Atlanta for a performance that is free and open to the public on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Last month, the drumming school received the Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent, the nationwide talent competition, from host Terry Crews. James Riles III, owner and CEO of the nonprofit organization, started the academy in 2011. “I’m originally from Coffee County, Georgia. My hometown had one red light and not much to do, so when I was five years old, my parents bought me a drum set,” said Riles III. “I’d perform locally and play in church, and after I got into the school band, I received a scholarship to go to Morris Brown College. That’s where I got experience teaching and fell in love with teaching children.” Riles III composed and performed in Drumline and Drumline 2: A New Beat, and has grown the community-based Atlanta Drum Academy to approximately 60 students. Without a permanent training facility, the students practice once a week virtually and once a week in-person at a parent-owned karate studio in Riverdale. After winning the Golden Buzzer, the group will head to the semifinals of America’s Got Talent in Pasadena, Calif. later this summer for the opportunity to be voted into the finals by America. The Interlock is pleased to welcome Atlanta Drum Academy for a public, free performance on July 27 at the property’s Highline Park located at Howell Mill Road and Beeline Boulevard. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with food and drink vendors, along with merchandise available for purchase. The Atlanta Drum Academy performance will start at 7 p.m., and after the performance, guests are welcome to ask questions, try the drums out themselves and enjoy more food and shopping at West Midtown’s favorite mixed-use entertainment district.
