Description

Join WSU Extension for an introductory workshop on producing shiitake mushrooms on logs as an enterprise to add to your farm's crop lineup, or as a small startup side-income business. The course will largely be hands-on and interactive. We have leftover logs and shiitake spawn from our most recent set of trials that participants will get to inoculate during the workshop and bring home with them. Participants will also likely get to see some fruiting shiitake logs as we prepare for our first harvest of the year. Session 1: • Timber considerations: selection, cutting, and handling • Shiitake strain considerations • Inoculation procedures, equipment, logistics & labor efficiency • Shiitake production site considerations, and seasonal management • Shiitake enterprise planning considerations • WSU's current projects with forest-cultivated mushroom production Registration fees admit up to 3 members of the same farm; after clicking the green "Register" button, choose Member of a Company > Register > Create your company > and then add your farm's name to start registering everyone from your farm. All registration fees directly support WSU's Extension's forest-cultivated mushroom production systems research and education program. NOTE: The course sessions will commence rain-or-shine. Be sure to be prepared and dressed appropriately for the weather and walking through fields, forest, and handling power tools, hand tools, melted wax, and logs weighing up to 50 lbs. WSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of non-compliance may be reported through your local WSU Extension office. If you require specific accommodations, call WSU Clark County Extension at 564-397-5709 at least 1-2 weeks prior to the event.
