A Columbian-American, Serna is both a musician and a sociologist. She has pent time as a volunteer at the Kino Border Initiative Soup Kitchen in the border city of Nogales, Sonora. Her music has been focused on social justice, and has been used in films, on the Discovery Channel, by Jesuit Refugee Services, Bread For the World, the Creighton Backpacker film el Deportado and other vehicles.
