For the final concert of the season we’re pleased to present the premiere of a new work written for SPM by the young Afghan composer, Arson Fahim, who also serves as SPM’s assistant conductor. The 23-year-old Fahim was already internationally recognized before arriving to the US in August 2021 to further his studies in Boston. Often with socially conscious intent his music is evocative of the sounds and traditional culture of his native country, skillfully employing the resources of Western classical music. It’s a thrill to help bring a brand-new work to life. The program also features Bartok’s brilliant and nostalgic Piano Concerto No. 3, written as a gift to his wife at the end of his life. It looks back to a more romantic musical style but in Bartok’s distinctly contemporary voice. The acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman, who loves performing this work, will join us after two Covid related postponements! To close out the season is Mendelssohn’s ever-popular Symphony No. 3, the Scottish, full of wonderful melody, musical descriptions of Scottish landscapes and joyful energy.
There will be a preconcert talk 45 minutes prior to the performance.
