Diabulimia is a term to describe someone who is impacted concurrently by type 1 diabetes and an eating disorder. Although this is not yet identified as an independent eating disorder diagnosis, research estimates that ~30% of people who have type 1 diabetes purposefully omit or misuse their insulin for weight loss. Further, it is well established that the risk factors of athletes developing disordered eating or an eating disorder are elevated compared to non-athlete populations. Despite this information, diabulimia in athletic settings if often missed for a variety of reasons which can promote detrimental effects to an athlete’s well-being and athletic performance. The goal of this presentation will help to educate and empower audience members on how to better assess for, and understand diabulimia. Audience members will gain real-life experience by participating in 2 case studies. Bios: Dr. Kulberg is a licensed clinical psychologist with 25 years of experience in the treatment of anxiety and eating disorders, and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. She has also been trained through the International OCD Foundation in the use of Exposure with Response Prevention, the number one treatment for anxiety. Dr. Kulberg has been a speaker at IAEDP, MEDA and the IOCDF conference. Her past employers include various hospital, residential and outpatient settings, including the Child & Adolescent Eating Disorder Program at Eating Recovery Center in Denver. She is currently the owner/director of Anxiety Experts. She has also taught undergraduate and graduate level psychology courses. Shira Evans, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, has had the joy of working in the fields of sports nutrition and eating disorder care for several years. She has experiences working at all levels of care in eating disorder treatment and working in directorial roles in sports nutrition at both Dartmouth College and UNC Chapel Hill. Shira is the Director of Nutrition Services for Anxiety Experts and owns a private consulting business, Shira Evans Nutrition LLC. She has been a speaker at IAEDP, MEDA, IOCDF and other conferences on the national stage. Shira is a life-long athlete and is passionate about helping people improve their relationship with food, body image, and movement.
