Holocaust survivor Peter Stern will share his personal story of survival during a special event hosted by the Downingtown Area School District (DASD) Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). The evening presentation will take place on Monday, May 22 at 6 p.m. in the Downingtown High School West auditorium (445 Manor Ave., Downingtown). Stern was born in Nuremberg, Germany in March 1936. His family was forced to flee their home in 1941, and they were sent to a holding camp in Latvia before being transferred to the Riga ghetto. In 1943, they were transferred to a work camp in Russia, where they were eventually rescued by a German officer who arranged for them to be hidden in the Riga prison. After being moved to various concentration camps, they were finally liberated by the British in 1945 and immigrated to America in 1947. Stern graduated from high school in 1954 and attended the University of Missouri. He is married and has two sons and grandchildren. He and his wife currently reside in the Philadelphia area. At the event, Stern will share his story in his own words, discussing his experiences during the Holocaust and his journey to rebuild his life. He will also answer questions from the audience. "We are honored to host Peter Stern and share his incredible story with our community," said DASD DEI Director Justin Brown. "His message of resilience and hope is an inspiration to us all, and we hope that his words will inspire our audience to stand up against hate and intolerance."
