Many small communities are often overlooked when they are stationed within a larger city. But this was simply not the case for the wealthy African American business owners of Greenwood Ave in Tulsa, Oklahoma . At the time, the state housed approximately 2 . 1 million residents, with a little over 100,000 residing in Tulsa . In 1921, racism was quite prevalent . It was inevitable that a riot would erupt, and on May 31st of that year, the city’s 3,200 Caucasian residents who’d joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) enacted an 18 -hour massacre on this peaceful, prosperous community . The impending race massacre would become a fiery cloud over the Black neighborhood of Greenwood and a stain on Tulsa’s history
By 1921, Tulsa exhibited a growing and prosperous economy fueled by the oil industry, but was also known for its high segregation, evidenced by the city’s 10,000 Black residents largely residing in the small minority neighborhood called Greenwood Ave, a neighborhood consisting of its thriving business district, known as “Black Wall Street” .
The Tulsa Race Massacre became a historically horrid event initiated by a white mob attacking residents, homes, and businesses, reigning a fire upon the Greenwood Ave community for 18 straight hours, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands left homeless, resulting in one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U . S . history.
