Description

Where art and poetry intersect within community: an exploration. Spend a few hours building community, taking up a pen/pencil (even if you don’t consider yourself a writer), interacting with the art at MassMu, and exploring your voice. We will be guided by the circle values of: Confidentiality; Invitation, not obligation; Presumption of good will; Listening as a practice; Equal time. Ekphrasis is a term that comes from the Greek for “description.” Ekphrastic Poetry is the process of interacting with a piece of visual art through writing. The process can take many forms of which we will explore. There will be time for prompt or free writing, time spent in creative engagement with a piece of art, and time to read your work and receive the kind of feedback you desire from the rest of the group. Let’s explore and create together! Expanding Circles Collective staff are trained in the facilitation methods developed by Women Writing for(a) Change, an organization founded in Cincinnati, OH. Mary Ruth Kamp is a certified graduate of the 2022 Conscious Feminine Leadership Academy, a program of Women Writing for(a) Change. Register at www.MassillonMuseum.org/Tickets or by calling 330-833-4061. Please register by Thursday, June 1, to reserve your spot! Registration is separate for each Writing Circle date. The class fee is paid on a sliding scale. Please see below for further information. This workshop is open to anyone age 18 and older who is curious, wants to dedicate time to creative process and community building, and wants to get to know more of what MassMu has to offer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Quick Guide to the Sliding Scale for Payment: Offering a sliding scale for classes and products comes from a desire to create multiple access points with the understanding that not everyone has access to financial security and that cost should not hinder anyone's participation in creative and communal learning. -The top price class ticket ($35) is the actual cost of the class. If you choose a ticket price below the top tier you are receiving a discount. -The middle price ($25) is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little to no expendable income. Paying for this class may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship. -The bottom price ($15) is for those who struggle to meet basic needs and paying for this class would still be a significant hardship. Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility. Being honest with yourself and your financial situation when engaging with sliding scale practices grows strong and sustainable communities. It also respects the work of teachers and creators, like Mary Ruth. Read "The Sliding Scale: A Tool of Economic Justice" by Alexis J. Cunningfolk of Worts+Cunning Apothecary to learn more.
