Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was proclaimed on January 1, 1863. Two years later, on June 19th, 1865, Union Soldiers landed in Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were free. The tradition of Juneteenth Celebrations and other Emancipation Day celebrations began shortly after freedom came. By 1867 the Freedmen’s Bureau, a federal agency created to help African Americans transition from slavery to freedom, helped establish the first official Juneteenth celebration.
Today our goal is to continue this tradition as we celebrate African-American freedom and bring together community members. We celebrate freedom, resilience, resistance, and black empowerment!
