Its adjacent beaches include nesting areas for threatened shorebirds such as Piping Plovers and Least Terns that are protected during the summer months. Early May is a great time to see migrating birds on their stopover to nesting grounds in the far north as well as birds that nest around the marsh or on the barrier beach.
