He is nationally known instructor of Reading Smoke, Air Management, and Tactical Decision Making. He is the author and Co-author of several books including “Instructor 1 for Fire and Emergency Services” and “Air Management for the Fire Service”. Chief Jose will be presenting: “The Art of Reading Smoke” Through dynamic teaching and the use of fire-ground video, attendees will learn the skill of reading smoke. You will learn about the attributes of smoke including volume, velocity, density and color. Explore how those attributes will indicate fire size, fire location and predict fire behavior. Improve your strategic and tactical decision-making through Reading Smoke. The course was originally developed by Chief Dave Dodson who selected Phil as an adjunct instructor for the Reading Smoke curriculum after teaching with Phil at FDIC. “Tactical Decision Making” This is a highly-interactive and informative course where students learn to achieve rapid, accurate solutions to fire-ground problems. Using fire-ground video, Recognition-Primed strategies and a question based approach, Phil’s interactive style engages students in the decision-making process, where they will learn to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their tactical plans. Chief Salka and Chief Lasky will be presenting: “Fire Alarm Leadership: Real Leadership with Real People” Five Alarm Leadership is a dynamic program that is designed to energize and motivate the people in your department to perform and excel in everything they do. This program outlines many of the common situations that fire departments and fire companies find themselves in and presents suggestions and solutions to those situations. Chiefs Salka and Lasky, both 40-plus year veterans of the fire service have experienced many of the challenges and hurdles that your fire department is facing. They have learned through their experience as a company grade officer, command-level officer, and executive officer, how to treat people, how to motivate them, to coach and counsel them, and in some cases discipline them, so that they want to come back and contribute even more to this great profession. Issues such as integrity, inspiration, interest, innovation, insight and initiative are all discussed and applied to life in the firehouse and on the fireground. Join Chiefs John Salka and Rick Lasky as they guide you through your most difficult but vital role as a leader in the fire service. “The Three Degrees of Mayday” This program is a discussion about 3 categories or situations that firefighters can find themselves in that could result in a Mayday operation. Not every Mayday is the same and as a result not every RIT operation will be the same. Rapid Intervention Teams need to prepare for various urgent and dangerous situations of increasing difficulty. A single firefighter that is lost in a house fire may be handled adequately by a 4-person RIT with little other assistance. A 3-person engine company crew that experiences a loss of water or sudden flashover will require a larger and more robust RIT operation along with additional logistical support. The collapse of a burning building that traps 6 firefighters in a 2-story burning pile of debris will require an even more complex response. Join Chiefs Lasky and Salka as they discuss this new perspective on Mayday and RIT operations and learn how you can prepare your firefighters to handle ANY mayday situation with confidence.
