Description

What is a chiefdom, the type of society encountered by de Soto when he visited central South Carolina in 1540? Find out what recent digs and radiocarbon dates reveal about the late pre colonial Indians who lived in the vicinity of Camden. Dr. Gail Wagner combines anthropology, archaeology, and botany to share what is known about the chiefdom of Cofitachequi. Since 1978 Dr. Wagner has been helping museums and organizations recreate Indian gardens typical of different time periods. Her current five-year project at the Mulberry site will result in an exhibition later this year at the Native American Studies Center in Lancaster, SC. This program is sponsored by South Carolina Humanities, a not-for-profit organization; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture, and heritage. Event is free, but reservations are encouraged. You bring a lunch and we’ll provide the learning!
