CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT Join Magdalena Lamarre as she examines how women are perceived in popular culture through the lens of comic books and asks “what are their real powers?” When Superman first flew onto comic book pages, the Kryptonian set the bar for the future of the medium. Female superheroes also filled those pages from the start, but their portrayal has been a subject of controversy. This presentation examines how women are perceived in popular culture through the lens of comic books and asks “What are their real powers?” Magdalena Lamarre was a Full Professor of History and Sociology at Miami-Dade College. Since her retirement in 2016, she conducts lectures on Florida’s history, culture, diversity, and social justice. Lamarre earned a BA in History and Secondary Education from Hunter College, a MA in History Education from Stony Brook University, and completed post-graduate work in Sociology and Education at Florida International University.
