VENDORS WANTED! FREEDOM DAY: Juneteenth Festival of Morris County The Juneteenth Festival of Morris County is a lively event created for all families to celebrate the resilience, solidarity, history and culture of the Black community. The day includes live performances by The Kofi and Sankofa Drum & Dance Ensemble, The Bradford Hays Quartet, The Unity Steppers, local artists, a tribute to famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who made a historic visit to Morristown, NJ in 1865 and more. Enjoy vendors, community resource tables, DJ sets, food, the Atlantic Health & Job pavilion and a main stage filled with live entertainment. Juneteenth, traditionally observed on June 19th, commemorates Black liberation from the institution of slavery that took place at the end of the Civil War when President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became the law in all states. The day also highlights the resilience, solidarity, and culture of the Black Community. June 19, 1865, was the day word reached the enslaved in Galveston, Texas, though this emancipation actually ended slavery on paper two years earlier on January 1, 1863. The Sankofa Heritage Collective of Morris County was created to connect generations of people of African descent by expanding and documenting the contributions they have made to the community. The group connects the past, present, and future through workshops, forums, programs, and events that raise consciousness in regard to the historical and cultural heritage of African Americans.
