Jiu jitsu can be huge for an individual's mental health. In the short term, the activity increases strength and flexibility, improves cardiovascular fitness and leads to a state of "runner's high" through the release of endorphins and other "feel good" hormones. Over time, these adaptations can rebalance stress physiology and restore the dopaminergic, or rewards system, in the brain. Since these systems are often abnormal in individuals with mental illnesses, jiu jitsu is a fantastic means to treating mental health conditions and challenges.
While self-defense is the most obvious ability gained from jiu jitsu, the confidence that one gains from the activity can be applied to all aspects of life.
