This workshop provides an introduction to reading and studying handwritten documents from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries using facsimiles and originals of materials contained in the Historical Society archive. This workshop would survey some of the features of earlier styles of handwriting, including letterforms, punctuation, and spelling conventions and would also discuss pens, inks, and other details about the production of written documents. Some readings will be distributed in advance; transcription practice will be part of the workshop.
