Description
Pianist Jacqueline Schwab is delighted to share her program I Lift My Lamp at Seven Stars Arts Center! At a time when the United States has been engaging in serious and sometimes inflammatory discussions about issues of immigration and cultural diversity, I Lift My Lamp celebrates vintage songs and dance tunes from American immigrants. Inspired by Jacqueline’s childhood years in vibrant, multicultural Pittsburgh and also her work with documentary film maker Ken Burns, her program will focus on music from Western and Eastern Europe and the Caribbean and South America and will also include African American spirituals, Tin Pan Alley tunes and ragtime. Jacqueline will speak about the pieces and her connection to them from her Pittsburgh years, her later Boston life and her travels as a touring musician. https://www.sevenstarsarts.org/ Doors open at 1:30. Children under 12 – free admittance. Jacqueline spins musical stories out of the myriad strands in the American quilt and with the spirit of community music making at their heart. Her signature playing features in over a dozen of Ken Burns’ documentaries, including his Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War and Benjamin Franklin, as well as The Irish in America—The Long Journey Home and other PBS documentaries. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton and twice on national PBS with the American Pops Orchestra. She has accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. She has performed vintage American music in almost every state of the Union. She is well known to the traditional dance world for her groundbreaking playing with the Bare Necessities ensemble. Her recently-released solo album I Lift My Lamp—Illuminations from Immigrant America features vintage music from American immigrants. She is currently working on entr’acte music for May and June evenings of theatrical readings of plays about the war in Ukraine, sponsored by the Alliance for New Music—Theatre in Washington, DC. Jacqueline graduated from New England Conservatory, majoring in piano improvisation. Since her early years in Pittsburgh, PA, Jacqueline has long lived in Boston, MA, as well as on Cape Cod (and a year on Staten Island). https://www.jacquelineschwab.com PARKING!!
