Join us on Saturday, June 10th at 11:00 am for a free event with award-winning storyteller, Valerie Tutson, who will be presenting her “Journey to Juneteenth” program at the Salem Armory Visitor Center.
In celebration of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, Essex Heritage and the National Park Service are bringing multiple award-winning storyteller, Valerie Tutson, to the Salem Armory Visitor Center. Valerie will be presenting “Journey to Juneteenth”, a 45-minute program comprised of a collection of short stories celebrating freedom. During the performance, you will hear of the day news of Emancipation came to Galveston, Texas through the eyes of a fictional character Valerie created called Ma'lizzy. Audiences will learn about her life as an enslaved person, the day General Granger read Order No. 3, and what happened to her and her family after.
There is no cost associated with attending this event but registration is encouraged as space is limited. All ages welcome.
Please note: This performance will be taking place in the open atrium area of the Visitor Center, kids will be encouraged to sit on the floor, there will be some benches available for adults. A limited number of folding chairs may be available upon request.
