FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham is beginning 2021 with a jolt of new coronavirus cases and deaths. On Monday, city officials reported 155 new cases and three new deaths since Friday. Since Jan. 1, Framingham has counted 433 new cases, and six new deaths. Since last March, 5,577 people have contracted the virus and 190 have died. The number of active cases in Framingham stood at 1,281 on Monday. Active cases have been above 1,000 since the beginning of December. Active cases did not reach 1,000 during the first wave of the virus last spring. Framingham's daily positive infections and the citywide positive test rate — two important figures in determining whether Framingham is considered a "high-risk" community — were trending down around the holidays, but are now rising again. On Monday, the daily new cases per 100,000 people was at 62.32, up from 55.19 one week ago. The citywide positive test rate was at 7.61 percent, up from 7.34 percent on Jan. 4.
