Two events in one! 6-7pm - Mending 101 - $15 per person 7-8pm - Mending Night and Clothing Swap - free! Mending 101 will provide a basic overview of hand mending techniques for extending the life of well-loved clothing: - Sewing Buttons - Blanket Stitching Hems & Seams - Darning & Patching Holes No sewing experience necessary. If you've never threaded a needle in your life, you're welcome here. Bring your own clothes in need of mending, though some sample pieces will also be available for learning. The exact techniques covered in class can vary depending on student needs & questions. Mending is a traditional skill that extends the lifetime of your clothing, saving you money and reducing textile waste. 92 million tons of textile waste are produced globally every year. In recent years, sashiko or visible mending, has become a popular way to not only repair clothing but actually customize and beautiful your wardrobe. Stay after class for our free and open-to-the-public mending hour and clothing swap! Mending Night and Clothing Swap Have clothes that need repair? Bring your projects to work on in the company of others. Mending extends the life of your beloved clothing and can make your clothes more custom & beautiful. If you have no experience with mending, considering coming to our Mending 101 class immediately beforehand to learn some basic techniques. Have clothes in good condition that you no longer want? Consider bringing them to the Makerspace to swap with the community. Clear out your closet excess. It's good for you, your wallet & the planet! Our Soft Crafts Shop Manager will be available to help with questions & projects. Open to ages 12 and up (under 18 must be accompanied by parent/guardian) Instructor: Jess Waters Instructor Bio: Jess Waters is an artist living is Rollinsford, New Hampshire. She has sewn, mended, and customized her own clothes since long before it was cool. She volunteers as co-manager of the Soft Crafts shop at the Port City Makerspace. Masks are encouraged. If you are sick or think you may have been exposed recently, please don't come! Registration closes 3 days before event. Attendees can receive refunds up to 7 days before your event start date.
