KEYNOTE SPEAKER | Linda Villarosa, author of Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our NationVillarosa is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, where she covers race, inequality and health, and a former executive editor at Essence Magazine. Last year, she published the critically acclaimed Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation, featured in The Atlantic's Most Thought Provoking Books of 2022.
Her April 2020 New York Times Magazine cover story “A Terrible Price,” examined race, health disparities and COVID-19 through the lens of the Zulu Social Club of New Orleans, and her August 2020 article, “The Refinery Next Door,” looked at environmental justice in Philadelphia. In 2019, she contributed to the Times’ Pulitzer-Prize winning 1619 Project. Her essay highlighted physiological myths, based on race, that have endured since slavery. Her 2018 New York Times Magazine cover story, "Why America's Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis," was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. In 2017, her cover story "America's Hidden HIV Epidemic" was honored with an Excellence in Journalism Award from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, and she was inducted into the NLGJA Hall of Fame in 2020.
She is a graduate of the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY where she is a journalist in residence. She also teaches journalism, writing and Black Studies at the City College of New York.
