Description

Barbershop music emerged from the history and experience of African American singing traditions. At the turn of the 20th century, Barbershop developed into small quartets and ensembles throughout the United States as a way to pass time, share experiences with each other and sing for change. In this interactive performance, we move from music which inspired the Barbershop tradition – including spirituals and work songs – to it’s inspirations, such as “doo wop,” musical theater, and more. Songs include: Steal Away, And So It Goes, I’m Sitting On Top of the World, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Fred Rogers’ It’s You I Like, and more; plus solo sets performed by Daily Special. The audience will be invited to join in to sing, building on the Barbershop history rooted in community music making and improvisation. This is sure to be a grand and lively celebration!
