From the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach: January 11, 2021 New Year, new romance genres! The Sweetheart's Book Club is back this month discussing paranormal romances on Zoom on Thursday, January 14! Whether it's faeries, werewolves, or vampires, come discuss your favorite paranormal paramour! The Sweetheart's Book Club focuses on diverse love stories, so look for a title including a POC or LGBTQ love interest. Just in case you need help finding one, here are 5 must-reads that I recommend: Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas "Yadriel, a trans boy, summons the angry spirit of his high school's bad boy, and agrees to help him learn how he died, thereby proving himself a brujo, not a bruja, to his conservative family." - from the publisher When the Moon Was Ours by Ana Marie McLemore "As their deep friendship turns to love, Latina teenager Miel, who grows roses from her wrist, and Italian-Pakistani Samir, a transgender boy, fear their secrets will be exposed by the beautiful Bonner girls, four sisters rumored to be witches." - from the publisher The Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling "Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans." - from the publisher Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell "Simon Snow is back and he's coming to America! The story is supposed to be over. Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after... So why can't Simon Snow get off the couch? What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light... That's how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place..." - from the publisher Moon Called by Patricia Briggs "Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself." - from the publisher This press release was produced by the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach. The views expressed are the author's own.
