I have studied the fauna and flora of the Hudson Valley for >50 years and the Meadowlands since 1999. A particular interest is which organisms do well (or not) in urban areas. By surveying a wide variety of species, my colleagues and I have built a picture of Meadowlands biodiversity that should apply to other urban and industrial regions. This will allow managers to foster those animals and plants that thrive in cities, and prevent biodiversity loss in urbanizing regions. Urban greenspaces can contain suitable habitats for diverse flora and fauna with a few management guidelines such as allowing thickets to flourish, and not aggressively controlling non-native plants.
