'Balancing Public Safety-Using Taxpayer Dollars Wisely in a Growing Community'
Brian Mueller began his law enforcement career in 1996 as a Patrol Deputy with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. He worked his way through the ranks in supervisory and administrative roles in the law enforcement division throughout his first 15 years under Retired 28-year Sheriff Don Holloway. Brian was the Commander over the Law Enforcement Division for Sheriff Holloway’s last 3 years in office and was appointed Chief Deputy in 2011 when Sheriff Kevin Thom took office. For 12 years as Chief Deputy, Brian had oversight over all four divisions of the Sheriff’s Office (Law Enforcement, Jail, Juvenile Services Center, and Care Campus) and the Sheriff’s $38 million budget. In June of 2022, Brian was elected the 31st Sheriff of Pennington County and officially took office on January 03, 2023.
Brian’s wife, Jennifer, is a school teacher in Pennington County and they have three children. Brian values community and has served on numerous boards for non-profit organizations in the area for the last 20 years.
Brian earned his Bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University and is a Session 229 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He has been an active member of the South Dakota Sheriff’s Association for the past several years and holds membership with the National Sheriff’s Association, Western State’s Sheriff’s Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
