Make a traditional sweetgrass breadbasket with your own hands under the guidance of master basket maker Vera Manigault on Saturday, July 8th, 15th, 22th, and 29th, 11 am to 1 pm ET at the Gullah Museum in Georgetown, SC. Students are required to attend each $60 class. (Total fee: $240) Vera's family has created these vessels of memory for eight generations. Gullah Geechees have made sweetgrass baskets for centuries in a style that is identical to the coil baskets of West and Central Africa.
The class fee includes all materials needed to make a breadbasket.
During the class, participants will: Learn the difference between basket sewing and weaving, make their own breadbasket, and learn about Gullah Geechee basketmaking traditions.
