What's wrong with Uncle Fred? - Explaining addiction to family membersPresenter, Jerry L. Law, D.Min.,CMAT,CSAT,CIP This discussion will focus on the journey into chemical dependency/addiction as well as the Bio/Psycho/Social/Spiritual nature of Substance Use Disorders. We will challenge some conventional ideas about addiction, explore the concept of tolerance and how to live a successful life in recovery. We will also investigate how family members may be an important component of breaking the cycle of addiction through the elimination of enabling behaviors. In addition, we will explore the mechanisms of various mood-altering substances and how they affect the brain of those who use them. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the of this talk, participants will be able to:1. Define chemical dependency from medical, clinical, and practical perspectives. 2. Understand the concept of tolerance. 3. Describe the journey into chemical dependency. 4. Explain the mechanisms of mood-altering substances and how they affect the brain. Jerry L. Law, D.Min.,CMAT,CSAT,CIP Serves as the Executive Director of The Meadows in Wickenburg AZ, a residential program specializing in relationship disorders, addiction, substance abuse disorders and co-occurring behavioral health disorders. Dr. Law is a Certified Multiple Addiction Therapist, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, and Board-Certified Intervention Professional and a Board-Certified Professional Counselor. Jerry brings compassion and a first-hand understanding about how critical it is to break the cycle of addiction in the professional world as well as within the family. Prior to assuming the Executive Director Role at The Meadows, he held the same role at Gentle Path and Willow House. In this role, Jerry worked closely with the clinical teams and offered education and support to family members while their loved one is in treatment. Recognizing that addiction and behavioral health disorders are family diseases, Jerry also knows the importance of family support in the recovery process. We live in Community, and we must heal in Community. Registration 8:30am-9:00am Presentation 9:00-10:30 a.m AZ Time Continuing Education: 1.5 Continuing Education Credits or NBCC Clock Hours available. Please note you must register to receive a continuing education certificate. No partial credit will be given.• The Meadows is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Meadows maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Course meets criteria for 1.5 hours of continuing education for psychologists.• The Meadows is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements.
