Description

Because of the recent canoe fatality on the Chemung River and the beginning of the paddling season, Chemung River Friends is hosting a free canoe and kayak safety class at the Big Flats Community Center, from 6:30-8 p.m., May 22. The instructor is Jim Pfiffer, a veteran paddler who is a current volunteer and former founder and executive director of Chemung River Friends. The class is designed for paddlers of all skill levels. The class features a canoe, a kayak, paddling equipment, and a PowerPoint presentation. Topics include planning paddle trips, equipment, safety, hazards, weather, how to read a river, what to do in emergencies, paddling on lakes and reservoirs, and a Q&A. River Friends will give away free life vests and “If Found” ID stickers for your boats. We will also have more information about our beginner paddle class. For more information, contact Chemung River Friends’ executive director, Elizabeth Zilinski, at [email protected], or host Jim Pfiffer, [email protected].
