If you want to know the full origin story about the Lafayette band Ask for Ashley, you have to go back to the late 80s when Ivan Farnsworth (drums, vocals), his brother Gery Farnsworth (guitar, vocals), and Karl Domas (bass, vocals) were in a band called The Joker. We're talking big hair, spandex pants, and the whole nine yards. "We all more or less stopped playing music because we had families. We were busy raising our kids," remembers Ivan. A few years ago, they found a female vocalist and started back up again, naming their new band Ask for Ashley if you are wondering, there is no Ashley in the band; the name is from an overheard conversation that somehow stuck).
Their lead singer, Sarah Gauthier, came along not long after the band formed, enabling them to create emotionally charged covers of acts ranging from Grace Potter to Alans Morissette and Meredith Brooks on the throw back side, all the way to more current hits by Lady Gaga and Brandi Carlile. It's quite a catalog. "All members of the group have such a different take on music," Ivan says. "I've played in so many different bands; I've done R&B. I played in a country group. Our band plays really power-driven stuff Sarah is so much younger than the rest of us, so she comes up with songs we aren't always familiar with."
Having two different generations represented in a band that covers four decades worth of popular music really lends to Ask for Ashley's expansive repertoire, and it keeps their lineup fresh. They've performed memorable shows at local venues such as The Grouse Room, Blue Moon Saloon, and My Place Bar & Grill, among others. "The songs that we're really strong in are the female-driven sets by Alanis Morissette, Paramour, Pat Benetar.…singers like that," Ivan says. "Sarah is so good at singing those. It's just amazing to watch her work."
