Description

Although bonsai has gained popularity among plant hobbyists, it is still often considered difficult and unapproachable by many. However, with a basic skills foundation and understanding of the art form and medium, it doesn't have to be! Perfect for beginners, this workshop will increase your confidence with bonsai and provide a hands-on opportunity for learning. This two hour class begins with an art and cultural history tour of bonsai. Participants will then learn how to repot and wire a tree as well as practice bending and shaping techniques. The class concludes with a discussion about how to care for your tree once you get home. Cost: $85 includes professional instruction + materials (ceramic pot, tree, soil). Pre-registration is required. About the instructor: Daniel Coffey is an American bonsai artist and educator based in North Carolina. His passion for bonsai has led him to a deep appreciation for a variety of styles and disciplines within the art form. He has spent multiple years living in Japan as a formal apprentice to Junichiro Tanaka, 4th generation bonsai master of 'Aichien', a bonsai nursery in Nagoya Japan operating for over 120 years. Additionally, he has served as intern and visiting artist for some of the United States' finest public and private bonsai collections, including the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington D.C. and The Pacific Bonsai Museum in Federal Way, Washington. His work, both original compositions and contributions to well established bonsai, have been displayed at national level exhibitions in Japan and the United States. Danny runs a professional bonsai studio in Asheville where he teaches workshops and showcases his work. Check out Danny's website and find him on Instagram at @treethepeople.
