During month of May, 2023 the Havana History and Heritage Society is holding a month-long exhibit focusing on the role and contribution of Women in World War II. The faculty and staff from the Claude Pepper Library at FSU has designed and set up the exhibit using items selected from their WWII archival materials collection. The Women of World War II exhibit will include: A general overview of the many and varied contributions that women made to the war effort during World War II.Focused stories on four individual service women who served during WWII, each with personal archival material from the FSU collection.A focus on the many and varied contributions made by women to the war effort on the home front, featuring the contributions of five Havana women who made a difference.A section featuring the changing roles of women in the military over the years as well as opportunities for women in the military today.Numerous activities and events with local veteran groups are also being planned for the month including Saturday presentations and a veterans video and oral history project. Saturday Presentations: On Saturdays, May All sessions will start at 10:30 AM. May 13th - A panel discussion featuring 5 women USA veterans on serving through the decades.May 20th - Presentation on female artifacts from World War II by Robert Rubero, Manuscripts & Political Papers Archivist at the Claude Pepper Library.May 27th - Discussion and Q&A with Commander Kristina O’Connor on her distinguish military career and opportunities for women in the military today.Veterans Oral History Project: Few civilians truly understand the complex realities of our troops’ service and sacrifice. As Part of the Women of World War II exhibit planned for May, the Havana History & Historical Society (HHHS) will be conducting interviews with women military veterans. Our goal is to record first person reflections and narratives to help us understand the diverse experiences of active duty personnel and veterans alike.
