Accompanying everything that is said will be a visual presentation, including slides and several video examples of what is discussed. Day 1 WHAT IS A DOCUMENTARY - This section will go over the history of documentaries, the different types of documentaries, and the impact documentaries can have. This section will include several video examples.LOOKING AT DOCUMENTARY - The class will watch three short films. Following each film, they will discuss what was successful and whether the filmmaker accomplished their storytelling goal.Day 2 HOW TO MAKE A DOCUMENTARY - Every step of the documentary process will be addressed (briefly), from Idea to Research to Fundraising to Production to Post-Production to Distribution.WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ONE - Diving back into the different documentary styles, we go deeper into why documentaries are made and what each student might connect with in order to make their own film.MAKING YOUR OWN DOCUMENTARY - Finally, the students will be paired in teams of two and will be asked to make their own 30-second to 1-minute documentary based on my series One Minute, One Story. Using their phones, they will produce a one-shot documentary about anything they want that might be in the space...a desk, a friend, or the ceiling. Anything. The goal is just for them to see the possibilities in everything and to complete a film.(10% discount for seniors, students, and veterans. Contact [email protected] for your discount link!) About The Educator After a decade in television at ABC, Discovery Channel, and TLC amongst others, award winning producer and writer Emmett Williams decided it was time to tell stories he wished were being told. Since then, he’s produced dozens of documentaries, web series, podcasts and films for nonprofits worldwide. With an eye towards social justice and through an activist lens he has provided a platform for grieving mothers in Brazil to tell their story, produced a web series about climate change throughout Africa, portrayed dying fishing communities in Alaska, documented illegal logging activities in the Amazon, produced a Black Lives Matter web series one year after Ferguson, and filmed political protests everywhere from Standing Rock to Washington, DC. Recently, Emmett began production on a short film about gentrification in Milwaukee and his first fiction feature, HIGHWAY 9. Currently, Emmett is traveling around the country, screening his latest documentary, SISTER DOULA.
