Neighborhood Music School (NMS) announces the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new recording studio, which will allow the NMS community to access professional-class recording equipment, technology, and production experience. NMS will also debut Equitone Records, an in-house record label established to support local artists and address the racial and economic disparities in the music recording industry.
The event, which will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, will showcase performances by NMS alum and teaching artist Seny Camara, and Thabisa, one of the label's inaugural artists and a rising singer/songwriter in the New Haven music scene.
“This is an opportunity for students and artists to engage constructively in building the music industry we want to see,” said Noah Bloom, Executive Director of NMS. “This is a natural next step in our commitment to providing racial equity in music education, and supporting our students and community in their artistic growth. Equitone will go beyond just producing music; it will create an equitable and transparent relationship that empowers artists of color, drives social change, and allows our community to tell their stories."
The ribbon-cutting event will feature performances by various artists affiliated with Neighborhood Music School and Equitone Records.
