Interested in learning more about butterflies? Join NH Fish and Game and the Cheshire County Conservation District on Wednesday, May 31 from 1-4pm at Stonewall Farm (242 Chesterfield Rd, Keene, NH)!
You know the beautiful monarch butterfly, but what about the others? During this training, we will be exploring 20 common species that live in NH including their wing patterns, host plants they depend upon as caterpillars and various habitats they can be found in the state.
We will then learn how you can help butterfly populations by collecting data from your own backyard or during organized community days. Expand your knowledge beyond the monarch and tiger swallowtail to species such as the American Copper and Great Spangled Fritillary, and learn how you can take part in the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network!

This event is open to everyone! You do not need experience with butterflies or identification to participate. The format will be hybrid--some indoor learning time and some time outside looking for butterflies (weather-permitting). Outdoor activity will be light and across relatively flat terrain.

Hat, water, notebook/paperBinoculars, butterfly ID book (optional, extras may be available)About our educator: Heidi Holman is a biologist with NH Fish and Game working to conserve rare butterflies and New England cottontails in the state. She will help us explore many native butterfly species based on characteristics, host plants and habitat types and show how all of us can help conserve local butterflies.
Heidi's work includes habitat restoration and release of individuals from breeding programs to recover their populations. Heidi is excited to lead the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network, capturing the passion and contribution of others spending time outside who take the time to notice these “flowers that fly”.
