25 May, 2023

Description

The Columbus City Council, in collaboration with African leaders across the city, will be honoring Africa Day to show support and appreciation for Diaspora's impact on the greater Columbus community. This celebration allows the city of Columbus to recognize the independence of all African nations. Africa Day 2023 will honor not only the advancements and achievements of the various African communities here in Columbus but more specifically the initiatives and projects that have empowered generations to preserve their culture heritage while contributing to the growth here in Columbus, Ohio. Peter Gill from The Columbus Dispatch reports that “African immigrants in the Columbus metro area (which includes eight counties) contributed 11.5% of the area’s gross domestic product more than their share of the population and paid $712 million in state and local taxes in 2019” according to a report commissioned by the city of Columbus. The Celebration will include special guest remarks, light refreshments, dancing and the illumination of Columbus City Hall. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the African Diaspora's impact: past, present and future "I am not African because I was born in Africa but Africa was born in ME." Kwame Nkrumah
