We Will Have EverythingKick-off event for the 2023 Disability Activism In China: Celebrating Achievements & Embracing Challenges conferenceThe University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies and Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice invite you to join us for a screening of We Will Have Everything, an independent documentary about the lived reality of persons with intellectual disabilities, their assistants and their families in today’s China. After the screening, Zhiying Ma, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice will lead a discussion of the film with a group of guests working in promoting disability rights in China. This in-person event is free and open to the public; Registration is required. About the Film The film is an independent documentary about the daily lives of intellectually disabled individuals, a marginalized community in China of approximately 20 million. The community, largely ignored by the mainstream society, almost solely relies on support from family members. One of the film’s two directors, Mr. Jiang Nengjie, is one of the few independent documentary makers currently working in China who uses his films as his citizenship activism. Because of censorship, his films are rarely screened in commercial cinemas and only distributed through the internet. The other director, Ms. Feng Lu, is the executive director of Fengtai Lizhi, an independent living center for persons with intellectual disabilities in Beijing.
