Description
Barnes & Noble Northgate is thrilled to welcome authors and orca experts Nora Nickum and Rosanne Parry for a special event celebrating the release of SUPERPOD. Learn about the orcas during a reading and discussion with the authors, then take part in some hands-on activities. Be sure to grab signed copies of both books from the authors! This event is ideal for adults and young readers ages 6-13. We are excited to be partnering with The Whale Museum, which promotes stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. One of The Whale Museum's most important efforts has been to get more protection for the Southern Resident orcas. Data that is collected, compiled and archived by The Whale Museum has been used in several government studies to demonstrate the orcas' need for federal protection. If you so choose, a percentage of your purchase on Saturday, May 13, may go toward supporting this non-profit. HOW TO ATTEND Please RSVP on Eventbrite to attend. When you arrive at the event, show your confirmation email to a bookseller, and they will show you to the event area. Parking at Northgate is free for up to three hours. SUPERPOD The endangered Southern Resident orcas whistle and click their way around the waters of the Pacific Northwest in three small family groups while facing boat noise, pollution, and scarce food. Superpod introduces young readers to beloved orcas like Cookie, Shachi, and Tahlequah–spunky youngsters, wise grandmothers, devoted moms, and more. Throughout, readers will also meet people in a kind of “human superpod” fighting for the orcas’ recovery. Experts are training scat-sniffing dogs, studying orcas from the air, using hydrophones to learn about orca communication, and inventing ways to treat sick orcas. Author Nora Nickum also discusses her own work on laws to protect the orcas; tackles the dark history of orca capture for marine parks; visits a river with spawning salmon; and shares moments of wonder. Readers are invited to dive in to help save these intelligent, playful orcas with diverse action ideas and inspiration for a wide range of future careers.
